Room One Thousand (RM1000) is a medium and platform for creative engagement between University of California, Berkeley student body, current faculty and the college’s alumni, and San Francisco Bay Area practitioners. For its ninth printed issue, RM1000 furthers curation, production, and publication of experimental and original materials such as collaborative projects, interviews, games, and performances. RM1000 also begins to build a sustainable distribution network and outreach channels to broaden the audience for the print journal, and continues work to make their digital archive accessible.
Marta Elliott, editor-in-chief, is pursuing a master’s of architecture at University of California, Berkeley’s College of Environmental Design. She is an experienced carpenter, model maker, curator, and architectural editor transplanted in the Bay Area from New York. Elliot’s work and research challenges architectural medium and practice.
Tara Shi, editor-in-chief, is pursuing a master’s of architecture at University of California, Berkeley’s College of Environmental design. She is the cofounder of land-based artist residency “This Will Take Time” on the Mendocino coast, and cofounded art and technology studio “disk cactus” based out of West Oakland, California. She researches technology and new media in relation to the built environment.
Room One Thousand is assembled each year as a new team of current students predominantly from the College of Environmental Design, but open to all students at University of California, Berkeley. Rotating editor-in-chiefs are competitively selected as teams of two, with one experienced outgoing editor and an in-training new editor, to lead a team of roughly five to ten active members. The organization is structured around teams: editorial, graphics, lecture, competition, finance, administration, and outreach. While institutional knowledge is held by the editors-in-chief, Room One Thousand’s small size works as an essentially flat structure. Production of the journal is a highly collaborative and democratic process which adapts each year to the desires and interests of the participating editors and the production team.
